In the context of the province of Jaén, the area called "La Loma" is the zone which has more tradition in the handmade industry. This fact can be seen in the high number of workshops which exist, and in the variety of products manufactured in them. This rich handmade industry has been determined by the diversity of cultures in this territory, and by the border role Úbeda played in the Middle Ages.

POTTERY


Handmade objects manufactured in Úbeda usually have domestic functions.
Without any kind of doubt, pottery is the most important handmade industry in Ubeda. This aspect is also relevant in the culture of this city and follows traditional technics which come from the Mudejar period.

The objects which are manufactured are very varied, but it can be pointed out the objects glazed in colour like green, blue or brown, decorated with incisions.
One of the most representative pieces, related to the agriculture is the oil can.

It is manufactured with two kinds of clay, white and red, originating in the outskirts of the city. The proccess starts with the mixture of clay and water during the summer in order to eliminate the little stones, so that the mixture can be kneaded.

After that, the pieces are modelled in the potter´s wheel. Then they are proprly coloured. The final bright of their aspect is due to the glazed they receive after. The end of this process consists of the baking in the furnace.

The main activity in this area is the cabinet-making being the most important products th classical Spanish furniture with Renaissance influence, and the traditional popular furniture such as recess for storing food, etc.

Wood from pine and walnut is which is mainly used for this industry, even wood from olives is recently starting to be used.

Apart of furniture, these technics are used for other kinds of products, such as little domestic objects. In Úbeda it is also possible to find workers who manufacture their poducts according to the traditional technics of the Andalusian religius image-making.

This production dates back to the XI century, during the Arab period, when the carpets called "ubedíes" became very famous.

Today some of the products which are elaborated are carpets, tapestries mats and domestic baskets.
Historically, these technics have a lot of tradition in Úbeda, which have resurgenced in the lasts years, related to the restoration of historic buildings.

There are many workshops in the city, where many products such as decorative objects are manufactured.
Domestic and urban furniture products are actually manufactured in Úbeda and so are decorative objects made with these technics.

This kind of work dates back to the XVI century, and also many of the models used in the pieces date back to the Renaissance period.
